Merlot [mer-LOH]

The third most widely planted varietal in the world (after Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay), this red grape can be soft or bold. It’s earliest known use occurs in Bordeaux and it remains one of the major varietals used in that region today.

Origin

French. Named after blackbirds (merle in French) because its dark blue berries matched the coloring, Merlot is incredibly durable and planted widely across the world. Our Merlot is planted on a lightly sloping, south-facing field.

Tasting Notes

Merlot produces red fruit notes along with earthy tones and is notably low to medium in tannins and acidity. It is the principal grape (60%) in our Admiral’s Blend and 1/3 of our Ephemera blend.
