Petit Verdot
Petit Verdot (pe-TEE ver-DOH)
Origin
Petit Verdot originates from Bordeaux, France, and is one of the five recognized Bordeaux varietals in making Bordeaux blends where it offers deep purple color and tannins. In the Mid-Atlantic and other hot regions, Petit Verdot is often bottled as a single varietal where it has a strong following. It can be a difficult grape to grow and is our last grape to harvest. It can be harvested as many as 6-8 weeks later than some of our earliest whites.
Tasting Notes
This full-bodied wine typically offers flavors of black fruit including plum and blueberry with floral notes of violet and lilac. Our Petit Verdot is aged in French oak due to the high tannins and has medium to high acidity. Petit Verdot can often be cellared for 10 years due to its high tannins.
Pairings
Petit Verdot is highly structured, so it pairs well with red meat roasts, steaks, and other bold foods. It also pairs nicely with sausage and game. Venison stew is a favorite pairing!
